BIDEFORD Water Festival is back with a splash! The popular summer event and holiday attraction - started by Bideford Round Table 20 years ago - has ebbed away in recent years. But now Bideford Rotary Club has taken the helm and the festival is back on July 13 with a varied programme.Events will include an open air service in Jubilee Square, rescue displays, gig racing, kite surfing and wake boarding displays, tug-o-war across the river, human fruit machines, and side stalls and attractions. The festival's famous pram race will be replaced by a sedan chair race. Teams of five will battle it out along a course taking in nine local pubs and will be hampered by having to consume beer at each one. Sedan chairs can be inspected from 2pm in Jubilee Square - also the venue for the 6.30pm prizegiving for all events.Bideford Rotary also celebrate the election of their new president, accountant Michael Palmer. He urges everyone to go along and enjoy the fun of the festival."Bring as many friends as you can, spend as much as you can afford and have fun, knowing that you're helping to raise funds for good causes," he said. The Rotary Club of Bideford is a major fundraiser for good causes, last year raising over £50,000 for Rotary Shelterbox alone. Water Festival funds will go to the Children's Hospice, Shelterbox, Appledore RNLI and Rotary charities.Visit www.bidefordwaterfestival.co.uk or contact Bill Pope on (01237) 479121 or e-mail him at bpope@seldons.co.uk for information.
