Huge crowds turned out in Ilfracombe on Saturday to see fabulous flying characters and much more besides at Southwest Birdman 2017. More than 16,000 turned out for the free Ilfracombe Round Table spectacular at the pier to enjoy live music, spectacle, stalls, food, drink and of course various costumed aviators intent on proving the theory of gravity. Superheroes, villains, Mario Bros, cows and many more attempted to glide, dive and plummet from the platform to much applause. Leo Cooper of Ilfracombe Round table said it was early days but they thought this years event would raise more than £10,000 for local charities and good causes. He said: It was absolutely fantastic throughout we couldnt be happier with how it went and Ilfracombe was chock-a-block all day. Thank you to everyone who was part of it and a huge thank you to the large number of volunteers who put in a massive shift to make it all hap[pen. The standard of jumpers was great this year and we saw lots of good flying machines. The overall winners on the day were Team Batman, who polled the highest score from the judges for their efforts to catch The Joker.
