Police have appealed for the public to be vigilant after a householder disturbed three balaclava-clad men trying to break into his vehicle.

It happened in the Newtown area near South Molton on Monday, March 19 at about 10pm.

The intruders made off in a dark-coloured car without taking anything.

Sergeant Ian Rowe of South Molton police said if people saw anything suspicious taking place or a crime in progress they should report it immediately by calling 999.

He said there had also been a long-running series of scrap battery thefts in the South Molton area, with thieves targeting garages or anywhere that batteries are stored.

He said these thefts had been linked to a white van that came down the Link Road from outside of the force area.

Police are currently investigating and enquiries are continuing.
