Work has started on a brand new primary school in South Molton with pupils set to move in next April.Pupils and teachers have helped to cut the turf for the new school and nursery at Exeter Gate, which will replace the outdated North Street junior school, due to become a primary school in September. Pupils are expected to move to the new school in time for the 2017 summer term. Head teacher Kevin ODonnell said: It is great to see work getting under way. Everyone in school is hugely excited that the building work has started and we are really looking forward to watching the school take shape and moving to our new school in April next year. The Gazette first revealed plans for the new school in November 2014. Plans were submitted to North Devon Council in November 2015. The school will initially accommodate 240 pupils, including 30 nursery-aged children, but will expand to 420 places to cope with the extra housing planned for the town. Extensive outdoor grounds will be used for sports, play, forest schools, vegetable and flower growing and environmental areas to support the curriculum. The school has already appointed its first reception class teacher, Meryl Logan, who will be welcoming the schools first crop of children in September. She said, I am really excited about this fantastic opportunity for the school and Im enjoying getting to know the children and parents.
