Shops and businesses urged to sign up to Purple Angel campaign

Shops and businesses in South Molton are being asked to become ‘dementia friendly’ – all 250 of them.

Mayor Steve Lock has started a crusade to sign them up to the Purple Angel scheme, which is designed to raise awareness of the challenges faced by people with dementia.

Mr Lock, whose own sister Rene Higgins suffered with dementia until her death earlier this month, said he hoped local businesses would pledge their support.

“We’ve only just started, but I hope every shop and business signs up and helps South Molton become the first ‘dementia friendly’ town in North Devon,” he said.

On July 12, the town will host a second talk by Purple Angel founder Norman McNamara, in the town hall at 2pm.

Dementia sufferer Mr McNamara, from Torbay, founded the campaign in 2012 after being rudely spoken to by a shopkeeper.
