Inquest concludes that 25-year-old intended to take his own life

A delivery driver from South Molton intended to take his own life when he fell from a viaduct on the North Devon Link Road.

Craig Andrew Rendle, 25, was pronounced dead shortly after 1am on Saturday July 9.

An inquest in Bideford today (Wednesday) heard Mr Rendle died as a result of ‘unsurvivable’ injuries sustained from the fall.

In a statement, he was described by this father Kevin Rendle as ‘a fun loving person who didn’t realise how many friends he had’.

Mr Rendle was described as someone who loved spending time with his friends and cars and regularly participated in banger racing.

The inquest heard that a break-up with his girlfriend had ‘taken its toll’ on Mr Rendle in the week leading up to his death.

The two were on their way back to South Molton when Mr Rendle stopped the car on the viaduct, got out and jumped from the bridge.

Coroner John Tomalin said: “It certainly seems to me that Craig has acted on impulse, and that impulse has led him to end his life.”

He recorded a conclusion of suicide.
