Town encouraged to make a real song and dance about this year’s parade

A musical-themed carnival takes place in South Molton on Saturday.

The parade will assemble in Southley Road from 4pm ready for judging from 5pm. The procession starts at 6pm.

The crowning of carnival queen Jessica Goldbourne takes place on the Square between 11.30am and 12noon. Jessica will be attended by carnival princess Maddie Kennealy and page boy Harry Kiburn.

Organiser South Molton Rotary Club said it hopes to build on the event's success in recent years.

Rotarian Peter Hardwick said: "South Molton Carnival has developed into one of the premier community events both within the South Molton area and beyond.

"This year, entrants are encouraged to have a theme linked to a musical from stage or screen, although the playing of music is entirely voluntary.

The seven classes of entry are (walking classes) 1, walk with the animals; 2, fancy dress group; 3, decorated wheelbarrow, bicycle, mobility scooter, wheelchair or other; (floats/vehicles) 4, tableaux mainly children; 5, tableaux mainly adults; 6, decorated trade; 7, classic/vintage vehicle with 2,3 or 4 wheels.

A certificate, rosette and trophy will be awarded to the winner of each of each class, with certificates and rosettes to second and third places in each class.

Trophies will also be awarded to the best musical entry and most amusing entry.

There will also be a family fun fair and a variety of food and drink outlets available within the town and pannier market.
