Police are investigating an alleged attempted break-in in South Molton yesterday (Thursday).
A community alert said there was an attempt ‘by an unknown person’ to enter the porch of a property in Alexandra Terrace.
They were then disturbed and fled the scene.
The incident happened at around 2.40pm and the person is said to have fled with a pair of shoes.
Police are urging residents to check doors and windows are securely closed and locked.
The occupant of the property, who wished to remain anonymous, contacted the Gazette to say her door had been insecure due to a medical condition.
She said: “I have Non Epileptic Attack Disorder (in other words I have seizures) and if I need to call for an ambulance then they need to be able to get into the house quickly and easily.
“I am rectifying this by having a chain put on the door so burglars will be discouraged but paramedics could still get in to me.
“I just wanted to clarify why I keep doors unlocked and even slightly open, as people can be easy to shift blame onto the person saying it’s their fault and I feel that I should be able to leave my doors unlocked when I am home in the middle of the day.”
Anyone who has any information can contact police on 101 quoting CR-005286-19.
