Thieves steal cash, charity box contents and staff tips after breaking into the attraction at the weekend

The owner of Ilfracombe Aquarium has spoken of his sadness after the attraction was burgled at the weekend and cash stolen.

Thieves broke into the building and then into an office overnight on Saturday and Sunday.

Doors were damaged, cash and staff tips taken plus a Marine Conservation Society charity box emptied and left on the floor.

Owner Lawrence Raybone said there was real sorrow that people out there were prepared to do that sort of thing: “It generates an enormous amount of sadness as far as the team here is concerned and we can only hope the authorities catch up with these people.

“Thank goodness none of the livestock were harmed and life support systems were not mindlessly damaged.

“We have experienced nothing but support since we opened. For anyone to contravene that and decide to do mindless damage is just so very sad.”

Mr Raybone thanked carpenter Colin Moore and fabricator Pete Long who have been helping with the repairs and the aquarium is open as normal.
