HEDGEHOG foster mum Anni Nicholls of Braunton has been amazed by the response from Gazette readers to her appeal for homes for her special guests.Within two days of the paper coming out Anni had more than 200 calls from people offering her hedgehogs a home, including from as far afield as Cornwall. Over the next few days, more calls came flooding in, taking the number above 300.Working alongside Diana Lewis of the North Devon Animal Ambulance, Anni has been providing homes for hedgehogs which have found themselves in prickly situations and have needed special care. But now back to full health and with spring in the air, Anni's current nine hedgehog guests are coming out of hibernation and she is looking for suitable and safe areas in which they can be released. The Gazette was delighted to give her a hand by telling her story - and readers have rushed to the rescue."It was a wonderful article and since the story came out the phone has not stopped ringing," said Anni. "I would like to say how overwhelmed I have been to the response received from the article. I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge 'thank you' to all the kind, caring and considerate people I have had the pleasure to speak to. To those who called, and I could not respond, I can only apologise and hope they are not offended. The sheer number of calls received made it almost impossible to answer all messages and speak to everyone." Anni said she now has a long list of sites to check out that could be suitable for the hedgehogs and is sure that they will all find good homes.
