SIR - As I sip my 23p can of supermarket beer, I drink in the news that the pubs' association is proposing to put up the price of a pint from £2.20 to £4.They must think they've got their customers over a barrel. Instead of handled glass, or pewter tin, wouldn't it be more appropriate to pour their ale into big mugs?It is a flawed policy to just accept the impingement of the civil liberties of some of their customers and at the same time penalise those whose loyalty they retain. The smoking ban means the non-smoker has to pick up the tab of the dear departed smoker as the pubs continue to commit the cardinal error of everyone chasing the same market, overpriced food.House prices are destined to crash by £20,000 this year, while heating costs are set to go through the roof and the first thing to go when the belt tightens is eating out. Pubs will close in their thousands.Soon, the only thing left on the menu will be cheesy credit crunchies and stale Northern Rock cakes. Landlords will have to get of their big fat assets and do what their New York counterparts have done, bring back smoking rooms to their premises.Although a virtual non-smoker myself, I just want the right to buy the biggest cigar on the shelf when my Premium Bond comes up and what's wrong with that?I don't think anyone will mind when I order a round of drinks to go with it!T P Gidman, Woodville, Barnstaple.
