BARNSTAPLE councillors will today (Tuesday) visit Rock Park to see how work is progressing on the new skate park.Work on the long-awaited development, which will at last skateboarders a purpose built town centre site, started in January and completion is expected by April, weather permitting.Site preparation has now been completed and some concrete is being laid. It has been funded by North Devon Council, Barnstaple Town Council, Devon Youth Service, Barnstaple SK8 Committee and the Bridge Trust.It is part of the redevelopment of Rock Park, which has included new toilets and a play area."I'm absolutely thrilled that after four years of effort we can now see the much needed youth facility being provided for the youngsters in the area," said Councillor John Wilsher, who instigated the project and has worked to see it over various hurdles and through to completion."The state of the art skate park together with BMX area, youth shelters and MUGA will make a huge difference and will prove immensely popular with skaters and riders throughout the district and even regionally."Special thanks must go Devon Youth Service and of course to the youngsters themselves for helping me battle constantly for scarce resources. It just goes to show how perseverance can pay off in time."I look forward to borrowing a skateboard and falling off at the first ramp!
