PRELIMINARY work has started on the new £40 million Bideford College.An official sod-cutting ceremony is planned for early March, but construction workers are already on site making preparations.Initially, seven classrooms will be demolished to make space for the main works to begin, also taking in the current sports fields.When the new build is completed, all but one of the remaining school buildings will be demolished, providing space for new sports provision.The new college, which is due for completion at Easter 2010, will cater for up to 2,000 pupils. The current school has a roll of just under 1,800.Once all the works on the new school, demolition of the old buildings and redevelopment of the sports facilities have been completed on the main site, the satellite Geneva School site could provide space for local needs housing.A county council spokesman said: "We will be giving Torridge the opportunity to nominate a Registered Social Landlord, with whom to negotiate for a sale.
