A large 'sinkhole' has opened up on the banks of the estuary near Velator at Braunton Burrows.

The hole is near tidal sluice gates which feed into the river and it is understood a meeting is being held today (Friday) to discuss the situation.

Matt Fryer is a regular visitor to the burrows and spotted the pit for the first time last night as he walked his dog.

"It wouldn't surprise me if it happened on the last big set of tides we had," he said.

"I'm no expert, but from a layman's point of view, it's not going to be long before that whole pathway is gone. It was a real shock to see it and I won't be taking my kids down there until something is done.

"I think if it's left unattended then over the years nature will take its own path."
