Walk through the night and help beat cancer sooner with mini festival for Cancer Research UK in Barnstaple this July

Teams of volunteers are being urged to make this July's Relay for Life in Barnstaple the best yet.

The event at the Rugby Club on July 22-23 will see hundreds of people walking through the night in their determination to beat cancer by raising money for Cancer Research UK.

The Boots Barnstaple team gathered in store on Friday and took turns on a treadmill to raise awareness for the Relay and collect donations.

Event chairman Lisa Mackenzie said there were already 30 teams signed up for this year and they hoped to beat last year's total of 33.

"Last year we raised £58,000 and this year we're hoping to raise more than £60,000," she said.

"We would like to see as many people as possible. Cancer survivors are especially welcome and will be VIPs for the weekend."

Relay for Life runs from noon to noon and begins with a special survivors' lap of honour, as well as an emotional candle of hope ceremony as darkness descends.

It is a mini-festival, with plenty for spectators too, including live bands, DJs, face-painting, bouncy castles, stalls and much more.

It is free to enter a team in the event, with all sponsorship going to Cancer Research. By entering online, teams will receive t-shirts, with a special purple one for survivors. All ages are welcome.

Lisa said: "The highlight last year was just everybody coming together, it was just incredible. Everybody was there for the same reason, and that's to beat cancer sooner.

"Even if you are not part of a team, come down - there's lots for the kids to do and everybody can take part."

To enter, go to the Relay for Life North Devon website or email chair.ndrelay@gmail.com or call Lisa on 07725 145781.

* The next event is a Quiz Night on June 1 at the Rugby Club from 7.30pm. Teams up to four, £20 per team. To enter, call 01271 326722 or see Fay or Pat at Boots.
