Barnstaple shoppers will have the chance to find out about the return of Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life in the High Street this Saturday (April 14).

The event manager will be promoting the local Race for Life 5km and 10km event, which will take place at Seven Brethren Bank on Sunday, July 1.

They will be encouraging passing mums, daughters, sisters and friends to sign up and help make a real difference in the fight against cancer.

The team will also be on hand to answer questions about fundraising and what Cancer Research UK scientists are doing to help treat, diagnose and prevent cancer.

There will be entertainment throughout the day from ChaSamba Fitness in the morning, Dance Energy early afternoon and Wren Music who will be performing later in the afternoon.

All have kindly given up their time to support the charity and will be helping create a buzz around the event.

The North Devon Relay Committee will be helping to create a sea of pink around the town centre; collecting around town and promoting their Relay for Life North Devon which is taking place on Saturday, July 28 at Barnstaple Rugby Club.

Race for Life's Devon event manager Amy Salmon said: "Life-saving research is being funded right now thanks to the women of Devon who take part in Race for Life.

"We hope that passing shoppers will be inspired to join the fight and sign up to take part in Race for Life.

"By raising money, our participants play a crucial role in helping to turn discoveries made in the lab into better treatments for patients in Devon and across the UK.

"Race for Life events are non-competitive and participants can choose to walk, jog or run around the course.

"Whether they're planning a 5km amble, a 10km sprint or a mud-splattered dash around the Pretty Muddy obstacle course, it's not about being first over the finish line - it's the taking part that counts."One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before.

Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK's work has been at the heart of that progress.
