Healthcare Trust to hold information stand in Barnstaple this weekend where you can sign the organ donor register.

If you’re thinking about becoming an organ donor, Northern Devon Healthcare Trust is holding an information stand in Barnstaple this weekend.

Members of the trust will be in the High Street on Friday and Saturday, offering information and an opportunity to discuss becoming a donor.

The trust is holding the event as part of National Transplant Week, and in memory of Barnstaple’s Katie Gammon.

Donna Knight, senior nurse for critical care services, and Tam Jackson, specialist nurse in organ donation for NHS Blood and Transplant, said Katie’s ‘beautiful smile and positive outlook on life touched us all’.

In a statement, they said: “Katie joined the hospital as a champion for organ donation in 2014, following her own lung transplant the previous year.

“During last year’s National Transplant Week, Katie joined and supported the local specialist nurse in organ donation and other members of hospital staff in Barnstaple High Street.

“The aim of the campaign was to promote the benefits of organ donation and highlight the importance of discussing wishes with family and friends.”

It was one of Katie’s wishes to encourage as many people as possible to sign up to the organ donor register.
