THE search is on for new tenants for shop units in Barnstaple's historic Butchers Row. North Devon Council currently has two units to let, providing a unique business opportunity in one of Barnstaple's most famous streets.Butchers Row was built at the same time as Barnstaple's Pannier Market, which opened in 1855. The shops were positioned in the shade of the market to keep the meat in the butchers' shops cool. Today there are 14 Grade II listed shops on Butchers Row. Current traders include bakers, butchers, fishmongers, delicatessens, greengrocers and florists. Lead Member for Asset Management, Councillor Richard Edgell said: "These shops are in a prime trading position in the town and are a great opportunity to secure a prominent position on flexible short term leases between the High Street and Boutport Street, next to the Pannier Market."In addition, the council has also obtained planning permission to convert the old traders' toilets in the middle of Butchers Row into two smaller single-bay units. These units will be advertised shortly. The available units are a two-bay and a three-bay shop. If you are interested please contact North Devon Council on (01271) 388281.
