Shoplifter stole games and sold them to buy food

The 18-year-old stole £288 worth of games from Tesco Extra in Barnstaple and sold them for £100.

A YOUNG man stole five games from Tesco Extra in Barnstaple by shoving them up his top before selling them to buy food, a court heard on Friday.

Connor Godfrey, 18, who is living in emergency accommodation at The Square, Barnstaple, was seen on CCTV entering the store with two other men.

He put one X Box game and four PlayStation games, worth a total of £288, up his top and left the store without paying.

When police officers came to review the CCTV footage, the same three men entered the store in the same clothing and were arrested.

Godfrey admitted taking the games and selling them to a gaming store in Barnstaple for £100 which he used to buy food.

He told North Devon Magistrates Court he had been laid off from his job and had spent the last two years sofa surfing after leaving home at the age of 15.

Magistrates gave him a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered him to pay £50 in compensation to the store and a £15 victim surcharge.
