A shoplifter admitted stealing two baskets of meat from a Braunton shop in an act of stupidity.John Orme-Smalley, of Barnstaple, was seen on CCTV carrying out the thefts on January 10 and March 5. On both occassions the 28-year-old entered the Co-Op store, filled a basket with meat and then left. Magistrates heard on the second occasion Orme-Smalley felt guilty and dumped the meat in a lane. Tim Hook, defending, called the two thefts stupid and said Orme-Smalley did not have a drink of drug problem like 95 per cent of these cases. Magistrates fined him a total of £500 and ordered him to pay £100 compensation to Co-Op.
