Barnstaple man, 28, admitted twice walking into shop and leaving without paying for meat.

A shoplifter admitted stealing two baskets of meat from a Braunton shop in an 'act of stupidity'.

John Orme-Smalley, of Barnstaple, was seen on CCTV carrying out the thefts on January 10 and March 5.

On both occassions the 28-year-old entered the Co-Op store, filled a basket with meat and then left.

North Devon Magistrates' Court heard the offences also put Orme-Smalley in breach of a conditional discharge for a previous theft offence imposed by the crown court.

Magistrates heard on the second occasion Orme-Smalley 'felt guilty' and dumped the meat in a lane.

Tim Hook, defending, called the two thefts 'stupid' and said Orme-Smalley did not have a drink of drug problem like '95 per cent of these cases'.

Magistrates fined him a total of £500 and ordered him to pay £100 compensation to Co-Op.
