Applications are now open for this year’s carnival royalty, with the winners receiving prize money sponsored by Tesco

The organisers of Barnstaple Carnival are on the lookout for a carnival queen and two princesses for this year’s event.

Preparations for this year’s carnival, which takes place on Saturday, September 16, are well underway and prospective royalty are now able to put their names forward.

Girls aged 10-18 can apply to be queen, while would-be princesses should be aged between five and nine years.

Candidates must be within the Barnstaple postal area, and have until June 30 to submit their entries.

A queen choosing event will be held at the Barnstaple Hotel on Thursday, July 13, at 7pm.

The queen will receive prize money of £250 and the princesses will each receive £100, thanks to sponsorship from Tesco.

The 2016 parade was the town’s 70th consecutive carnival, with 13-year-old Liberty Sheldon crowned carnival queen alongside princesses Skye Piper and Evie Rose-Wall.
