SEVEN North Devon schools are closed today (Wednesday) as a result of a strike by local Government workers.Braunton School and Community College, Forches Cross Community Primary School, Ilfracombe College, Pathfields School, Pilton Community College, South Molton Community Infant School, and Lampard Community School are all shut due to Unison members' walk-out over pay. According to Unison, the schools are expected to remain closed tomorrow.They are among a number of local services affected by the first of two days' of strikes in protest of a below-inflation pay offer of 2.45 per cent.Unison regional officer for Devon, Helen Eccles, said about 50 per cent of local Government staff in North Devon were not at work today."North Devon Council offices are operating with a skeleton staff," she told the Gazette."The council is covering refuse collection with a number of agency staff so operations are limited."The housing advice service is also limited, while the library in Barnstaple is closed."South West Unison press officer Jenn Gollings said that North Devon members would be among local Government staff taking part in a rally from the civic centre to the Methodist church hall, in Exeter, at 12noon tomorrow."Coaches from North Devon will be taking members to the rally," she said.
