CATERING staff at Ilfracombe Junior School are celebrating after achieving a maximum five stars with the district council's Scores on the Doors scheme. As with all organisations preparing or providing food, the school received an unannounced inspection by North Devon District Council environmental health officers. They were graded on hygiene, structure and hygiene management, covering all aspects of work in the kitchen.Kitchen manager Simon Meredith has been in his post for a year and was delighted with the outcome of the inspection, which makes them one of the highest scoring North Devon schools:"It means we have met all their criteria to the maximum and the inspectors were really happy with everything they saw," he said."I think the scheme is a good idea because it lets the public know exactly what they are getting."It's lovely working here at the school, we have great support from Catherine Cox the headteacher and all the staff."The kitchen ensures it provides the children with fresh food, using produce straight from the school garden and local produce wherever possible, including organic milk from nearby West Hill Farm.
