A Barnstaple primary school has received a huge boost following the opening of its £1.7 million new school hall.Life at the school has been transformed after Devon County Council provided funding for the hall, plus a new playground, community room, nursery classroom and ancillary facilities. The spacious modern hall was designed by architect Richard Jones, working for the council and built on time and within budget by Midas Construction. It was officially opened on Friday by the chairman of the council Councillor John Rawlinson, who said it was an excellent facility and one which would be of great benefit to the community too, increasing its ties with the school. The building work has made best use of the school site, with the old 1950s canteen being demolished to make way for a flat playground and the former hall being turned into the community room and new classroom.Headteacher Mark Henderson said the new buildings had fostered a real sense of pride in the children and staff."The results have started to transform our school," he said."We now have a modern, multi-purpose hall and kitchen, a good sized, flat playground, a welcoming foyer and enhanced office and reception, improved visitor's entrance and parking, a light and bright nursery classroom and a well used community room that offers a range of services to our families and community.
