TORRIDGE councillors have written to the Prime Minister voicing their "serious concerns" over proposals to close some of the district's rural post offices. They have urged Mr Brown to reconsider the proposed closure programme and its likely effects on rural life. Their main concern was the inevitable detrimental effect a closure would have on the daily lives of local residents and the social structure of local communities as a whole. The letter also draws the Prime Minister's attention to the fact that many rural Post Offices are often housed with other retail businesses and are mutually supportive. Council leader James Morrish initially proposed the writing of the letter to Number 10 and this was endorsed by the full council. The list of proposed Post Office closures in Devon will be published on May 20.
