Saunton Sands is piloting a new scheme designed to promote water safety awareness along the UK coast. Surf Life Saving Great Britain (SLSGB) and South West Water have launched the Graduate Lifeguard Programme for 14-16 year olds. Members of the scheme will visit schools and clubs in the region to promote water safety to under 16s, a group that makes up a high proportion of drowning incidents. The programme will launch fully in April, with their message being delivered to an estimated 150,000 people. Pete Lawrence, chairman of SLSGB said: Most drowning is preventable, but young people need to be equipped with some water safety awareness to avoid getting into dangerous situations.
