HEADSTONES and cemetery memorials in Barnstaple will undergo safety tests later this month.Following a series of incidents across the country where people have been injured or killed by falling memorials, Barnstaple Town Council will be focusing on Bear Street Cemetery to ensure the safety of visitors, contractors and staff.Headstones that fail a visual, manual and machine test will be made safe by a qualified contractor under current health and safety regulations. Signs will be put up in the cemetery to inform the public and letters will be sent to all graves' owners notifying them prior to testing.A spokesperson for the town council said: "We appreciate that this action may cause concern and apologise for any distress, but the council must comply with current health and safety requirements and the Local Authorities' Cemeteries Order 1977 for everyone's safety."For more details, or if you have any information concerning the change of ownership of a headstone in Bear Street Cemetery, contact Tracey Weaver, senior committee clerk on (01271) 373311.
