Devon County Council seeks permission for a £2.6m bridge across the A39
Plans have been lodged for a £2.6million ‘bridge to nowhere’ over the North Devon Link Road near Barnstaple.
The application has been made by Devon County Council and is for a cycle and footbridge that would connect Roundswell to proposed new retail and employment land.
While both sides of the road are currently fields, a statement with the planning application says Roundswell Business Park is to be expanded by around 5.4 hectares while a new business campus is proposed to the south of the A39 and west of the B3232.
It says this campus will include commercial units and cover an area of approximately 6.1 hectares as well as a 0.8 hectare ‘park and change’ facility.

The statement said the bridge would ‘provide an important ‘off-network’ link’ and ‘will be used by a variety of users including day visitors, commuters and local residents’.
The Gazette revealed the bridge proposals in October, with Fremington County Councillor Frank Biederman questioning whether so much public money should be spent on it.

The bridge is just part of what could be a major explosion of the Roundswell area, with plans for the new business parks, a new St John’s Garden Centre next to the roundabout, as well as 235 new homes at Tews Lane and 277 at the former Fremington army camp.
