Are you getting dressed up for Ilfracombe Carnival this Sunday?

Ilfracombe Lions Club is urging people to follow the lion and join in the town carnival on its new date of this Sunday.

Assembly is at the swimming pool with judging at 5pm, and the parade moves off at 6pm.

A revised route for this year has seen the reinstatement of the harbour section, with the procession continuing on down St James Place and around the harbour.

Ilfracombe Lions chairman Steve Ashton said there had been ‘overwhelming’ support from businesses in the town this year and they hoped the community would turn out to take part in the carnival or stand on their doorsteps and support it.

He said the new date of Sunday rather than the traditional Thursday evening had proved popular and he hoped with the bank holiday weekend it would encourage more people to come out.

It is hoped the event will raise at least £2,000 for local good causes.

He said: “If we work together we can to take the carnival to another level. We hope that individuals, families and organisations will want to get behind us; there are many different ways to get involved as dancers, walkers, musicians , fancy dress, floats, sponsors or just helpers.

“We are hoping to establish a high profile for llfracombe which will hopefully benefit local people and business. The carnival together with the other events over the weekend should really get the town buzzing with excitement.”

The Landmark Beer & Music Festival runs right through from Friday to Monday, while the ‘little cars with the big hearts’ return to fill the seafront on Monday afternoon as the North Devon Mini Run arrives in the town.

* Carnival entries can still be accepted up to 5.30pm on the day of the parade, or pick up forms from the Tourist Information Centre at the Landmark, St James Dairy, Tinker Tailor Party Shop or Coversure Insurance.
