ROADSIDE interviews are being carried out across Barnstaple and Bideford this month. Engineering consultant Parsons Brinckerhoff has been commissioned by Devon County Council to carry out the survey to provide the council with information to update the traffic model of the area. The model will be used to help North Devon and Torridge District Councils to determine the best locations for development in the area over the next 20 years, and the transport schemes needed to support them. The surveys will take place at the beginning of this month over a 12-hour period, from 7am to 7pm, on the A361, A39, A386 and A3125.Police officers will be on site to direct vehicles, chosen at random, into specially created interview bays. During busy periods the police will also guide traffic from the interview bays back onto the carriageway. The vehicle type and occupancy will be noted and drivers will be asked the following questions:Where they are going; where they have come from; why they are making the journey; and how often they make the journey. Interviews will last approximately one to two minutes and surveyors will enter the information into hand held computers. The data is computer coded and only retained in statistical form. Although vehicles should stop if directed by the police, drivers are not required to answer any questions if they do not wish to.
