4.30pm snow update: Extreme snow conditions in the Ilfracombe area have abated and most roads are now passable, police have said.But Lynton and Lynmouth remain cut off, although the A39 is navigable as far as Barbrook.Severe snowfall this morning saw police close the main roads around Ilfracombe at Mullacott Cross and Lynton Cross.Those roads are now open, including the Muddiford to Lynton Cross road, but a large quantity of slushy snow on the road beyond Muddiford towards Ilfracombe is still making driving conditions treacherous.Heavy snow fell until mid-morning in the Ilfracombe area, turning into rain at the lowest levels but making a nightmare of the road network into all the coastal communities.One Combe Martin resident said the amount of snow was the worst they had seen in more than 20 years of living in the village.Police and Devon County Council have warned drivers temperatures are set to plummet tonight, with partially cleared roads refreezing and becoming treacherous. The police have urged motorists not to venture out tonight unless for the most critical of reasons.
