Rifles' bugle heralds 'fredom' of Barnstaple

BARNSTAPLE'S links with the county's army regiment have been celebrated with the presentation of a silver bugle to the town council.The Rifles, which formed to incorporate the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment on February 1, 2007, made the presentation to Mayor, Cllr Jeremy Phillips, to commemorate the regiment's continued association with the town.In turn, Cllr Phillips presented Brigadier Jolyon Jackson with an illuminated scroll which confirmed that the Freedom of the Town previously held by the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment was transferred to the Rifles Regiment.It is hoped that a Freedom March will be held in Barnstaple in 2010 when the Regiment has completed its tour of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq.
