A dedicated Ilfracombe Academy maths teacher has won a rare award from Oxford University.

Joy Humphrey has become one of a handful of teachers in the UK to be honoured with the university’s Inspirational Teacher Award after being nominated by a former student.

Megan Jones, in her first year at Trinity College, said without Mrs Humphrey’s help and support she would not be at Oxford.

“She is a committed and dedicated teacher whose enthusiasm for maths is inspirational,” she said.

“Ilfracombe Academy is lucky to have her on staff and I have been very lucky to have had the privilege of being one of her students.”

Joy said she was deeply touched to receive the award:

“I love working with the young people in our Sixth Form and helping them prepare for the next stage of their life,” she said.

“Here at Ilfracombe all the Sixth Form team support the students as much as possible through the admissions process.

“It is very rewarding when a hardworking and intelligent student such as Megan goes on to achieve the place that she deserves at a top university.”
