North Devon’s Clearwater to brew tailored ales for local pubs.

A NORTH Devon brewery is offering pubs the chance to sell their own branded traditional cask ale.

Clearwater Brewery has successfully trialled tailored beers in the Westward Arms in Westward Ho! and the Instow Arms in Instow.

Landlord Martin Seymour said their beer, ‘High Tide’, a smoky, smooth, chestnut traditional cask ale, had proved a hit with drinkers.

He said: “Over the summer, the beer has gone down very well with our customers who like the fact that the pubs have their own beer.

“High Tide is also used to sponsor the tide boards outside my pubs and this cooperation highlights the best of two local businesses working together to meet customers’ needs.”

Paul Stewart-Reed, head brewer at Clearwater, established in Torrington in 1998 but now based in Manteo Way, Bideford, said: “There are so many different beers coming from large and small brewers that we decided it was appropriate that landlords had the chance to have a beer brand of their own.

“We have already had a couple of successful trials and now we would like to extend the offer Devon-wide.”

Clearwater offers its ‘Devon’s Own’ range across the county and beyond in both bottles and casks ranging from the 3.7 per cent abv ‘Real Smiler’ to a winter special ‘Dark Night at 5.2 per cent abv.

Mr Stewart-Reed added: “If there are landlords out there that want a beer that’s just for them, then give us a call or look at our website.”
