An Ilfracombe woman has been sentenced to 12 weeks in prison for carrying an axe for ‘self-protection’.

Jennifer Chell, 28, of Larkstone Terrace appeared at North Devon Magistrates' Court on Friday, charged with possessing an offensive weapon in Ilfracombe High Street on January 3.

Police were speaking to Chell about an unrelated incident, and noticed she was concealing something inside her coat.

She then produced the small axe and was arrested.

Chell had been on a probation-endorsed community order, which was revoked due to difficulties on April 9.

As she had not co-operated with probation, magistrates felt they had no choice but to sentence Chell to a custodial sentence.
