Eight North Devon businesses celebrated their work with a resource efficiency group at an awards ceremony.. Companies from Bideford and Barnstaple came together with more than 20 other businesses from across the region at the first ever POWER awards ceremony. The event, organised by Business Link, was designed to bring together local businesses and organisations that have been part of the POWER group, which was set up two years ago so that members could share knowledge and best practice on resource efficiency, either in the form of energy efficiency, a reduction in the use of raw materials, waste reduction or water saving measures. Environmentally conscious companies such as Coombe Fisheries, Brend Hotels, St John's Garden Centre, Leaderflush and Shapland attended the event at Roadford Lake, near Okehampton, where they were presented with certificates and champagne for their efforts in becoming more resourceful. Martin Woods, environmental advisor for Business Link, said: "The day was a great success and provided everyone involved with an ideal opportunity to share the latest knowledge and best practice for increasing resource efficiency. "The consumption of the Earth's resources is climbing its way to the very top of the national and international agenda and it's great to see that so many of the region's top organisations are not only keeping up, but leading the way." Leading seafood processor Coombe Fisheries Ltd, based in Barnstaple, was one of the first companies to join the POWER group. Richard Spear, director of Coombe Fisheries Ltd, said: "Our efficiency is hugely important to us and being part of the POWER group has helped us to focus our efforts and investigate new technologies. As individual companies we acknowledge our responsibilities and have integrated resource efficiency into the very core of our business. "Through our involvement with the POWER group and our own ideas, we are on course to reduce our utility consumption by an average of 20 per cent over the next 12 months whilst still growing as a company." The businesses from North Devon awarded on the day included; Small and Tidmas, AAVF, Lambda, Home Hardware South West, Coombe Fisheries, Brend Hotels, St John Garden Centre and Leaderflush and Shapland.
