Plans have been revealed for 138 homes at the Mannings Pit beauty spot in Pilton. A public exhibition is being held on Monday, March 21 at the Castle Centre in Barnstaple by Oxfordshire-based planning consultant Framptons. There has been strong public opposition to any development on the site since it was sold at auction in October to an unnamed buyer. Local people say generations have grown up enjoying walking and playing at the picturesque meadow. Framptons says it is working on a scheme for up to 138 affordable and open-market homes on the land off Windsor Road. It says the proposal will include a range of family homes, public open space and an ecology park. The exhibition runs from 3-8pm and the project design team will be in attendance to speak to the public. Ina joint statement, Pilton district councillors Brian Greenslade and Mair Manuel said they were appalled at yet another development application. They said: The rape of Pilton continues. When will greedy developers learn enough is enough? Pilton like the Bickington/Fremington area is becoming an overspill area around Barnstaple. The infrastructure does not exist and will not be easily obtained to support this scale of development. Roads for example are already at capacity in some places. Flood risk is yet another concern. We will vigorously oppose this proposal which would, if passed, further destroy a lovely established community.
