POPPY the dog had to be rescued by three fire crews after becoming stuck on the banks of the River Torridge yesterday (Sunday.)

The collie was out with her owner at about 6pm when she fell two metres down an embankment near the Puffing Billy in Torrington and became trapped on the bank.

Her concerned owner called the fire service and crews from Torrington, Bideford and the Specialist Rescue Team from Camels Head rushed to Poppy's aid.

They used a short extension ladder for access and buoyancy aids to extract the dog from her predicament and return her unharmed to a grateful owner.
