Police get tough on irresponsible bike riders
POLICE in Barnstaple have been encouraging cyclists to ride responsibly this autumn.
On Friday, officers spent the day and night reminding riders to wear reflective clothing and to ensure their bikes are fitted with lights and reflectors. Police also spoke to a number of cyclists seen riding on pavements or using bikes which were not roadworthy.
Operation Bright Riders was organised after local residents raised a number of concerns about irresponsible cyclists at recent PACT (Police and Community Together) meetings.
“The emphasis is on education, but where necessary enforcement action through fixed penalty notices will also take place,” said PCSO Steve Huxtable.
