Police say they have been unable to identify the body of a man recovered from the River Taw in Barnstaple on Saturday evening. Members of the public raised the alarm at around 4pm, triggering a large scale recovery operation including police, fire service, ambulance, coastguard and Appledore lifeboat. The body of the man, thought to be in his 50s, was pulled from the water at around 5.10pm. Police say he has not yet been formally identified and they are not treating his death as suspicious. Anyone with any information about the incident, or who saw someone acting strangely near the waters edge by the Heritage Centre, is asked to call police on 101.
