DEVON and Cornwall Police have issued a force-wide warning following a spate of pickpocketing offences across the two regions.Three elderly women had their purses stolen from their bags as they shopped in Truro City centre. The victims were targeted in shops and the public library yesterday (Wednesday).Similar offences were reported in the Teignbridge area. A purse containing cash was stolen from a lady who was shopping in a charity shop in Queens Street, Newton Abbot between 12.30 and 1pm.The offenders are described as three females of Eastern European appearance.A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "It appears that the offenders are visiting various areas within the force and stealing from a number of people before moving on."The victims are invariably elderly women and the thieves take the opportunity to steal purses from larger shopping bags."Although we have had three reports in Truro, it is likely that other offences may be committed elsewhere in the force area."We would ask that people take some common sense precautions to prevent themselves from becoming a victim of this type of crime. Make it difficult for a thief to steal your purse by, for example, keeping it in a zipped pocket inside your coat."Anyone with any information regarding these crimes is asked to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 quoting crime reference GT/09/615.
