AN Ilfracombe teenager has been charged with assault after allegedly kicking a policeman in the head on New Years Day.

Police were called to Broad Street at about 12.45am in the wake of the town's New Years Eve celebrations following reports of public disorder.

As an officer attempted to make an arrest he was allegedly kicked in the head by the youth. Two colleagues hastened to help him and also suffered minor injuries.

A 15-yr-old Ilfracombe boy received a police reprimand while a 16-year-old, also of Ilfracombe, was charged with assault and is due to appear at North Devon Youth Court on Tuesday, January 19.
