Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was found lying on a roadside verge in Barnstaple with serious internal injuries.

A man was discovered lying on the side of a busy Barnstaple road with serious injuries on Sunday morning.

The casualty, 32, from Barnstaple, was found in Eastern Avenue at around 6.45am after reports came in of him lying in the verge.

He was taken to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital where he was diagnosed as having serious internal injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle or being assaulted.

The injured man was described as being of slim build, 5ft 10 height with a beard and dark spikey hair.

A police spokesman said: "We believe that at 4.45am he was dropped off in a taxi to Long Meadow Drive, Barnstaple.

"Police are appealing to the public to help piece together what happened from this point and to help trace his movements prior to being discovered with his injuries around two hours later."
