Police are appealing for witnesses to establish how a man came to be found with serious head injuries in Barnstaple town centre.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was found in Barnstaple with serious head injuries.

The 39-year-old Barnstaple man was found lying injured in Church Lane at around 9pm by an ambulance crew.

He was taken to North Devon District Hospital but later transferred to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth where he remains in a serious condition.

Police are investigating how the man sustained the injuries and are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed any incident involving him, either in Church Lane or the surrounding area.

Detective Sergeant Steve Bates, of Barnstaple CID, said: "At this stage it is very unclear how the injuries were caused.

"We are not sure whether the man has fallen down or has been the victim of an assault.

"The town centre would have been busy at that time on a Saturday night so we are appealing to anyone who was in area at the time and witnessed any incident involving this man to contact police."
