A MOVE to phase out the use of plastic carrier bags in Torridge shops has gained support from the district council. The environment-friendly call from Green councillor Miranda Cox met with unanimous support from the council's Community Development Committee on Monday.Mrs Cox told the Gazette that following this backing it would now be a matter of talking with the local chambers of commerce and supermarkets."We will encourage shops not to automatically hand out plastic carrier bags and people to think of re-using and not wasting. One idea is that we could also get bags made in cotton or canvas, perhaps with the Torridge logo on."There are a lot of initiatives throughout the country," she said.
