Councillors agreed in principle to co-locate Bideford Library with the Burton Art Gallery and Museum in Victoria Park.

Plans to move Bideford Library to the Burton Art Gallery and Museum are one step closer after councillors agreed the idea ‘in principle’.

A feasibility study presented to Torridge’s community and resources committee on Monday said there would be ‘significant potential’ to redevelop the Burton into a larger building and incorporate the library within it.

The study, agreed in July 2013 by Torridge District Council (TDC), and funded by Arts Council England, acknowledged that it would be a ‘highly complex project’.

The report said Devon County Council (DCC) had allocated £1.5million towards a new library, but a total of £5million would be needed to extend the building.

A planning workshop on June 1 between DCC and TDC agreed that the new building should be run by one organisation.

On Monday, members agreed to the co-location of the library and gallery and museum in Victoria Park in principle.

They also agreed a joint steering group of relevant TDC and DCC officers should be established and funding investigated.
