Plans are underway for a new church school in Barnstaple ‘if the need is there’.

The Diocese of Exeter is hoping to build a new church school in Barnstaple as part of one of the town’s new housing developments.

The news came just days after Newport Primary Academy announced it was looking to submit an application for a 420-place school with nursery at either Larkbear or Tews Lane in Roundswell.

The new church school will only be built if there is demand from parents for a church school and if approved by the Department of Education could open in 2018.

Philip Mantell, director of education for the Diocese of Exeter, said: “We are hugely excited by the potential of these schools which would mark a key development in the expansion of Church education in Devon.”

The Diocese is currently consulting with the TEAM Multi Academy Trust, which currently comprises Pilton Bluecoat Church of England Academy, Brayford Academy and Umberleigh Primary Academy.

An open meeting about the proposed church school will be held on Monday at St Paul’s Church in Barnstaple at 6.30pm.
