Community Centre in Bideford gets full planning permission as it continutes to try and raise £7million.
Plans for a brand new community centre in Bideford are one step closer to fruition after receiving full planning permission.
Proposals for the multi-million pound Bridge Centre, the brainchild of the charity Wings South West, were first revealed in the Gazette in January 2012.
Outline planning permission for the site, at Moreton Park, was given in July 2014, with reserved matters approved in January.
Now Wings South West must raise £7million to build the project, which will house a restaurant, shop, sports hall, car parking and training facilities.
“We’ve had around £600,000 of pro bono work donated to us, and we’ve got until summer 2016 to raise the money,” said Paul Bowser, Wings’ chief executive.
“If built in phases, the first should take around nine months to build; or it will take around 12-14 months to build as one whole project.
“I think this shows the need for groups that was to do something like this to stay resilient.
“There are lots of people that want to make a difference and get a lot of knock backs along the way; that’s why public support has been so important to us.”
