A huge landslide has engulfed Sillery Sands beach near Lynmouth. The cliff fall happened on Sunday morning and Lynmouth Coastguard has warned people to stay away because the area near the beach is incredibly unstable. A landslide of hundreds of thousands of tons has swamped probably an eighth of the beach, this not a safe place to be, they said. While members of the team were surveying the area debris continued to fall, with rocks the size of cars constantly cascading down. The beach was popular with anglers and walkers but has been closed for a few years after high tides destroyed the steps leading down to it. There had been rumours the steps may be reinstated, but it seems likely the landslide could well have closed it for good.
