SPECTACULAR displays of lightning lit up North Devon skies last night (Thursday) as thunderstorms swept across the region.

Some stunning pictures have been captured by people throughout a widespread area from Torrington to Ilfracombe and beyond.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the South West tonight, going into Saturday, with the potential for more heavy thunderstorms and torrential rain.

It is being driven by a ‘Spanish plume’ - where warm air from the continent is forced to rapidly rise when it meets cooler air from the Atlantic.

If this happens over the UK it can set off violent thunderstorms with the potential for some intense downpours and hail.
